The Char Dham Yatra is a deeply personal journey that a person takes. It tests your faith and endurance and allows you to self-reflect. Every year, lakhs of devotees travel to the sacred Himalayan shrines of Yamunotri Temple, Gangotri Temple, Kedarnath Temple, and Badrinath Temple to experience this once-in-a-lifetime journey. In 2026, the Char Dham Yatra is expected to witness even higher participation due to improved infrastructure, such as roads, medical facilities, and streamlined online registration systems.
This guide covers registration details, routes, travel tips, the best time to visit, health advice, and everything else you need to know before embarking on your Char Dham Yatra.
The Char Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage to four sacred temples in Uttarakhand, situated high in the Garhwal Himalayas:
Yamunotri: It is a source of the River Yamuna, associated with Goddess Yamuna.
Gangotri: This is the origin of the River Ganga, dedicated to Goddess Ganga.
Kedarnath: It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
Badrinath: It is a sacred home of Lord Vishnu.
The holy journey starts from Yamunotri and ends at Badrinath.
The Char Dham temples open every year based on the Hindu calendar. The opening date of 2026 is expected to be late April to early May, and the closing is expected to be from October to November 2026. For official dates, you should keep checking official announcements.
It is necessary for every person going for the Char Dham Yatra to register. Follow the process:
1. Visit the official Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra portal and sign up using a valid mobile number.
2. The next thing to do is upload the required documents, that are a valid photo ID, a recent passport-size photo, a self-health declaration, emergency contact information, and passport and visa details if travelling from abroad.
3. Next, select travel dates and dhams.
4. Last, download or save the registration confirmation, and keep it handy.
Offline registration counters may be available in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, and select transit points.
The standard travel route starts from Haridwar/Rishikesh and then moves to Yamunotri and then to Gangotri. The next stop is Kedarnath, and Badrinath comes last in the Char Dham Yatra. You then head back to Rishikesh/Haridwar to start your return journey home.
There are various modes of travel that you can opt for to complete your holy journey:
1. By Road: This is the most popular and budget-friendly option, but it takes the most time.
2. By Helicopter: This one is expensive but ideal for senior citizens and anyone who wants short-duration trips. Helicopter services usually operate from Dehradun, Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi.
3. Trekking: Trekking is required for Yamunotri (6 km) and Kedarnath (16 km).
The ideal time is from May to June, as the weather is pleasant, but expect high crowds of pilgrims. July to August is the monsoon season, and landslides are possible, making it not a very ideal time to visit. September and October are winter months where you will witness clear skies, fewer pilgrims, and colder temperatures.
If you are travelling from anywhere other than India, it is highly advised that you take the best international travel insurance.
It is always the best idea to look for accommodation options in advance to get better pricing and more options. Hotels, guest houses, dharamshalas near temples, and lodges fill up fast as pilgrims travel in large numbers.
As far as food availability goes, you will find simple vegetarian meals, local Garhwali dishes, and even free food services at certain places.
Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are strictly prohibited in shrine zones.
It is important to be mindful of your safety and health when travelling to the Char Dham Yatra. Let us take a look at some tips to do so:
1. It is absolutely necessary to get a basic health check-up before traveling as temperatures can be really cold at high altitudes.
2. Make sure to carry warm clothing even when travelling in summer.
3. Ideally, acclimatise properly to avoid altitude sickness
4. Keep emergency medicines such as for nausea, bodyache, and headache handy.
5. Senior citizens and people with heart or respiratory conditions shouldn’t visit without consulting doctors.
6. Make sure to get travel insurance that lets you file an online claim. Having insurance will protect you against unnecessary disruptors like theft and delays.
Char Dham Yatra involves long travel hours, going to high altitudes, unpredictable weather, and physical exertion. Having proper planning in place ensures you have a smooth temple darshan and reduced health risks. It also helps in getting better accommodations, further smoothing your trip. Overall, a well-planned Char Dham Yatra ensures a safer travel experience.
