What are the key differences between Third-Party and Comprehensive Car Insurance?

Here are the differences between third-party liability and comprehensive insurance:

Feature

Third-Party Car Insurance

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Coverage

Covers only legal liabilities arising from injury, death, or property damage to a third party

Covers third-party liabilities plus own damage to your car

Own damage

Not covered

Covered (accidents, theft, fire, natural calamities, man-made risks)

Legal requirements

Mandatory under the Motor Vehicle Act

This is an optional cover

Protection

Limited

Offers much wider coverage and protection

Add-ons

Are not available

Several add-ons are available to choose from

Ideal for

For legal compliance and older vehicles

Better financial protection and newer, frequently driven and/or high-value cars

Is Own Damage (OD) only car insurance ever better than comprehensive?

Not really. Own damage car insurance covers only the damage to your car. Comprehensive car insurance, on the other hand, offers you coverage for own damage as well as third-party liability. An advantage of OD cover is that it costs less than comprehensive cover, but that’s because of the narrower protection. It often excludes bundled benefits, such as personal accident cover, and certain add-ons available under comprehensive plans. However, keep in mind that OD cover can be bought if you already have an active third-party policy

Why must every vehicle in India have Third-Party car insurance?

Third-party car insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. Protecting road accident victims, the coverage provides compensation for bodily injury, death, or property damage to third parties. The cover helps reduce the financial burden on vehicle owners and ensures legal compliance while driving on Indian roads.

How does a standalone own damage policy differ from comprehensive cover?

Here are the differences between a standalone own damage policy and a comprehensive cover:

Feature

Standalone Own Damage Policy

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Coverage

Covers damage only to the insured vehicle
Valid only with third-party liability

Covers third-party liabilities and damage to your car
Bundled policy

Third Party Liability

Protection

Add-ons

What is Usage-Based (Pay As You Drive) Car Insurance, and how does it work?

Usage-Based Car Insurance, also called Pay As You Drive, is coverage that is calculated based on how much you drive the insured vehicle. There are specific kilometre slabs, and you can choose the one that you think would suffice your needs. The premiums are adjusted accordingly.

This kind of coverage typically suits car owners who do not use their car much, or have more than one car and are looking to reduce their insurance premiums.

Can you combine multiple policy types into one plan?

Yes, you can. If you want to combine multiple policy types, then you are recommended to choose the comprehensive car insurance. It offers third-party liability and own damage cover. It allows you to customise the car coverage without managing multiple standalone policies. A major advantage of a comprehensive policy is that you can enhance coverage with add-ons such as zero depreciation, engine protection, and roadside assistance.

Are there car insurance types that cover car theft only?

No, there aren’t any car insurance plans specially for theft. However, own damage and comprehensive car insurance plans cover theft. The compensation is paid as per the Insured Declared value of your car.

If theft protection is a priority, you can choose the Return to Invoice add-on. In case of theft, you receive the actual invoice price as compensation, which is significantly higher than the IDV.

What type of insurance is best for old cars?

For an older car with low market value, a third-party car insurance policy may be sufficient and cost-effective. However, if your car is well-maintained or you use it frequently, you may want to choose a comprehensive policy without add-ons. You can also choose a usage-based plan, which would reduce premium costs but not coverage.

Which car insurance type gives the highest claim benefits?

Comprehensive car insurance offers the highest benefits due to its wide coverage. The policy covers third-party liability, own-vehicle damage, theft, and damage caused by natural or man-made disasters. By opting for add-ons like zero depreciation or engine protection, your claim amount can be significantly higher than that of other policies.

How does a zero claim bonus interact with different car insurance types?

A no-claim bonus applies only to the own damage component of car insurance. Therefore, it applies only to comprehensive, standalone own-damage policies, not to TP liability coverage. NCB is a great feature and can significantly reduce your car insurance premium.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

What unique benefits does comprehensive car insurance offer beyond third-party cover?

A comprehensive car insurance policy combines the benefits of third-party liability and own damage. It offers coverage to your beloved car against almost all types of damage, be it accidents, theft, fire, vandalism, riots, and natural calamities.

Another advantage of comprehensive car insurance is the option to include add-ons to your basic coverage. You can choose add-ons such as engine protection, roadside assistance, zero depreciation, return to invoice, etc., which can offer much wider financial protection.

Does comprehensive insurance cover damages from natural disasters?

Yes, it does. With comprehensive cover, you get coverage for damages that are caused by almost all kinds of natural disasters. This includes earthquakes, cyclones, landslides, hurricanes, etc. The claim amount depends on the policy terms, IDV, and deductibles.

What happens if a comprehensive policy expires without renewal?

When you don’t renew your car, you can expect the following:

  • You lose both third-party and own-damage protection

  • If caught without a valid policy, you be liable for a legal action and/ or a penalty

  • Insurers usually offer a 30-day grace period for renewal. However, any claim made during the grace period is not payable.

  • Renewing after expiry typically requires a vehicle inspection.

If you do not renew within 90 days, you will lose the accumulated NCB.

Is comprehensive insurance worth it for low-value cars?

For low-value, older, or occasionally driven cars, comprehensive car insurance can often seem expensive compared to third-party liability or own-damage cover. However, it can prove to be worthwhile if the car is regularly driven or if you live in high-risk/theft-prone areas.

A third-party liability would be comparatively much cheaper, but keep in mind that with a TP policy, only your liabilities are covered. Own damage is not covered.

How do deductibles vary in comprehensive car insurance?

Comprehensive car insurance policies include a mandatory deductible. This is a pre-decided and fixed amount. Over and above this is the optional voluntary deductible, which you, the policyholder, choose. Higher voluntary deductibles reduce premiums but increase out-of-pocket expenses at the time of a claim. The deductible amount directly affects the claim amount and the insurance premium.

Third-Party Car Insurance

What events are typically not covered under third-party car insurance?

Third-party car insurance covers damage or injury your car causes to a third party—people or property. It does not cover losses to your own car, even after an accident.
What’s excluded:

  • Damage to your own vehicle, regardless of cause

  • Theft or total loss of your car

  • Repairs due to fire, flood, or other natural events

  • Personal accident cover for the owner-driver (unless bought separately)

Any add-ons or optional covers.
In short, third-party insurance protects others. It does not protect your car.

Can third-party insurance be valid without own-damage cover?

Yes, the third-party liability insurance cover is a standalone policy. Under the Motor Vehicle Act, it is mandatory to have it as the minimum coverage. Therefore, opting for OD cover or a comprehensive policy is totally up to the vehicle owner. However, do keep in mind that any damage caused to your own car will have to be borne out of pocket, as there is no own damage protection.

What penalties apply if you drive without third-party insurance in India?

Driving without third-party insurance is illegal under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Penalties include a fine of ₹2,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three months for the first offence. Repeat offences attract higher fines of ₹4,000 and possible imprisonment.

How do premiums for third-party insurance get calculated?

Third-party car insurance premiums are decided by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). They are determined based on the vehicle’s engine capacity (measured in cubic capacity). These rates are standardised and are similar across insurance companies. Take a look at the premiums:

  • Cars with engine capacity less than 1000cc: ₹2,094/ year

  • Cars with engine capacity more than 1000cc but more than 1500cc: ₹3,416/ year

  • Cars with engine capacity over 1500cc: ₹7,897/ year

Does third-party insurance cover legal costs after an accident?

Yes, third-party car insurance covers legal liabilities arising from third-party injury, death, or property damage. This includes compensation awarded by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), which ensures financial protection against lawsuits resulting from road accidents.

Zero Depreciation Add-On / Enhanced Covers

How does zero depreciation change the claim payout?

Zero depreciation add-on removes the deduction for wear and tear on replaced car parts during a claim. This means the insurer pays the full cost of parts like plastic, rubber, fibre, and metal, except for deductibles. As a result, your out-of-pocket expense during repairs is significantly reduced compared to a standard policy.

When does zero depreciation not apply in a claim?

In most zero depreciation policies, the insurance companies usually allow you to make a maximum of 2 claims. Other than this, damages caused due to the following reasons are not covered:

  • If the owner/ driver was driving under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicant

  • If the owner/ driver does not have a valid driver’s license

The claim will not be possible for exclusions and compulsory deductibles.

Is a zero depreciation add-on worth the extra premium?

Yes, absolutely. The zero depreciation is worth the extra premium, especially if you have a new or expensive car. This add-on can reduce repair costs during claims by eliminating depreciation-related losses on parts. Frequent city driving, accident-prone areas, or high repair expenses make this add-on particularly beneficial for financial peace of mind.

Up to what vehicle age do most insurers allow zero depreciation cover?

Most insurers allow zero depreciation cover for cars up to 5 years old. Some insurance providers may extend it to 7 years, depending on the insurer and your vehicle’s condition. Post 5 years, the car’s wear and tear increases significantly and repair costs become less predictable.

Can zero depreciation be added mid-policy year?

No. Just like other add-on policies, a zero-depreciation cover can be added to the base policy at the time of purchase or renewal. If you want this cover, you’ll need to wait until renewal or buy a new comprehensive policy that includes the add-on.

Does zero depreciation apply to battery & tyres?

Typically no. Zero depreciation generally does not always apply to tyres and batteries. In most cases, tyres are covered only if damaged in an accident and only on a proportional basis. Similarly, batteries are usually excluded or covered only in specific scenarios, depending on policy terms and conditions.

What is nil depreciation vs zero depreciation? Are they the same?

Yes, nil depreciation and zero depreciation refer to the same add-on, and are used synonymously. Both mean that depreciation on replaced parts is not deducted during claim settlement. While the terminology may vary across insurers, the benefits mostly remain the same.

Does zero depreciation affect your no-claim bonus (NCB)?

No, usually zero depreciation has no affect the NCB. Making a claim under the zero dep will also be considered a claim, bringing your NCB to zero. If you are worried about losing out on your NCB, you can opt for an NCB Protect add-on. Here, even if you make a claim, the NCB remains intact.

How does zero depreciation coverage impact IDV?

Your zero depreciation coverage does not impact the car’s Insured Declared Value.  IDV is calculated based on the car’s age and market value. Zero depreciation only affects the claim settlement by removing loss of value due to depreciation; it does not affect the IDV.

What are the common exclusions in a zero depreciation add-on?

The zero depreciation add-on can significantly reduce your car insurance premium. However, keep in mind that there are certain car parts that are typically excluded when you raise a claim, such as car tyres, engine, etc. These may not be covered under zero dep. Apart from this, regular car insurance exclusions also apply to zero dep also.

Usage-Based / Pay As You Drive (UBI / PAYD / PHYD)

Who should consider pay-as-you-drive insurance?

Pay-as-you-drive insurance suits people who use their car occasionally or drive only limited kilometres annually. It works well for remote workers, senior citizens, owners of more than one car, and those who rely on public transport but want adequate insurance protection without paying for high annual usage.

How is the premium calculated in usage-based car insurance?

In usage-based or pay-as-you-drive car insurance, the premium is calculated based on specific kilometre slabs or actual distance driven. Lower usage attracts lower premiums. Slabs are typically like this:

  • 0 to 2,500 kilometres a year

  • 0 to 5,000 kilometres a year

  • 0 to 7,500 kilometres a year

  • 0 to 10,000 kilometres a year.

Will UBI reduce premiums for occasional drivers?

Yes, absolutely. Usage-based insurance can significantly reduce premiums for occasional drivers. The premium costs are linked to kilometres driven; low-mileage users can avoid paying for unused coverage. This makes UBI a cost-effective option as compared to standard comprehensive policies with comparatively higher annual premiums.

Does usage-based insurance use mobile tracking data?

Mostly no. In India, most plans track kilometres through odometer readings. Some insurance companies also use telematics devices, while some may track your driving history.

Are there privacy concerns with usage-based car insurance?

In most cases, usage-based car insurance relies on odometer readings, so there is minimal data collection. However, telematics-based UBI plans may record driving patterns.

Can you switch back to a regular policy from UBI anytime?

Yes absolutely. At the time of renewal, you have the freedom to choose any policy you like. You also have the option of adding or dropping an add-on. Keep in mind that policy switching is not allowed mid-term.

Electric Car Insurance (EV-Focused)

What special covers are needed for electric car insurance?

Car insurance directly depends on the MMV, that is make, model and variant of a car. Electric cars need specific covers such as battery protection, electric motor cover, charging equipment cover, and roadside assistance for battery drain.

Since EV components are costlier than conventional parts, special covers/ add-ons help manage high repair or replacement expenses. The right policy can ensure smoother claim settlement without unexpected financial trouble.

Does electric car insurance cover battery damage?

Under standard coverage, battery damage is generally not covered, unless in some cases where the damage has been caused by an accident. For electric cars, it is highly recommended that you choose EV car insurance with battery clauses. As far as possible, look for policies with battery replacement and technology cover.

Are premiums for electric cars higher than petrol/diesel?

Yes, premiums for electric cars are typically higher than those for petrol/diesel cars. This is because EVs and their parts are much more expensive than regular cars. For instance, a broken battery repair can easily go into lakhs. Also, the repair of these cars is often more complex and needs expertise, which further increases the repair costs.

How does insurance handle charging station accidents?

Like a regular car insurance policy, damages caused to an electric vehicle due to fire is covered in the EV car insurance policy.
